What Colleges Aren’t Teaching

Aug 2nd, 2009 by Greg de Lima in Uncategorized

After Reading Colleges Need to Teach Personal Branding on the Personal Branding Blog by Katie Konrath, it made me think that not so much of colleges needing to teach personal branding, but what are they omitting now, that’s being used on a massive level.

Sure they should teach personal branding in relation to their marketing coursework, or for their entrepreneurial majors, however, I still believe that more needs to be taught than merely personal branding.

For example, lets take social media integrations into your Marketing 101 Classes, or bringing in a more focused take of Branding, Social Media, and SEO and SEM into more advanced coursework.

I also would like to see some of the smaller colleges, for example mine, Appalachian State, put more effort into their internships, partnerships and opportunities for students. I have friends at UNC that are on an equal level that I am doing internships with Deloitte, Barclays and many other well known corporations. Just like Katie said, I believe that colleges are failing to connect the dots (I think my take is different than hers though). They take and take and take, but I believe that the return sometimes isn’t as beneficial is it potentially could be. Less and Less am I finding professors of my own that are willing to help look after myself and expand my career and my education rather than their tenure.

Why not help teach me to live well after college with a better job and better opportunites for succes?

Let me know what you think.

Totally agree on this one... The good thing about not forcing students to make themselves unique is it lets those with the initiative really shine. Welcome to my world.
